2M BBQ Smokehouse in San Antonio, Tx Review

Like most things in life, barbecue is subjective. If you talk to enthusiasts in states like Texas, California, Kansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Alabama, you are going to get many different answers as to what is the best barbecue. Each area has their traditions and recipes that have been passed down for generations.

There is no right or wrong in barbecue. It all comes down to what you like and what you’ve been accustomed to eating. The types of rubs and sauces used in barbecue change as you travel the country looking for savory meats. But, there is one thing that holds true. Different parts of the country specialize in certain cuts of meat. And in Texas, that cut of meat is the all mighty beef brisket.

We recently had the opportunity to visit one of our favorite barbecue joints in San Antonio, Tx, which is 2M Smokehouse. Let’s dive a little deeper into what makes this place so special.

2M Smokehouse Prices

The pricing at 2M Smokehouse is right on par with other comparable barbecue joints. I would even say their pricing is a better value given the quality of brisket they are producing. At the time of writing this, we paid $28 per pound for brisket and $6 for each link of sausage. The best barbecue restaurants in Austin, Tx are getting $30-$35 a pound for brisket. Yes, it’s crazy to think that a cut of meat that was once thrown aside by butchers is now demanding the same price as some ribeye steaks.

They also sell smoked turkey breast for $21.98 per pound, pulled pork for $17.98 per pound, and pork ribs for $21.98 per pound. Below is a link to their online menu for current pricing.

How Good is The BBQ at 2M Smokehouse?

At the time of writing this, the barbecue at 2M Smokehouse is the best in San Antonio, and it can hang with the best we have tried in Texas. We have eaten at some outstanding Texas barbecue joints, but there are those few places you visit that have that last 1%.

The last 1% is what all barbecue joints strive for, but few ever achieve. It is what separates the good from the great. While many will get close, the ones that actually get there keep it simple and stick to the basics.

They focus on what’s important and repeat the process with great success. For us, 2M Smokehouse has that last 1%.

2M Smokehouse Brisket

The brisket at 2M Smokehouse is ridiculously good, and it may be the best in Texas. Yes, I said it! The bark on the outside is black as night, with a tacky finish that can only be accomplished with hours of rolling smoke. The fat under the bark is rendered a perfect yellow hue with a sweet, smoky taste that accentuates the beef.

The brisket doesn’t have any particular taste from a specific seasoning or powder. What you taste is quality beef brisket smoked to perfection using age-old techniques that will never go out of style.

If you have ever smoked a brisket, you know how hard it can be to render the fat properly without over cooking the muscle. A good pit master can render the fat, so it complements perfectly the pull apart beef with every bite.

The pit masters at 2M Smokehouse start with properly trimmed briskets, which ultimately yield final brisket slices with a sticky bark and sweet, smoky fat that has the texture you would expect from a top-notch smokehouse.

Every time we have been to 2M Smokehouse, the barbecue consistency was on point. If you have made repeated visits to your favorite smokehouse, you know there are off and on days when it comes to brisket.

Anyone who smokes barbecue knows how hard it can be to produce consistent barbecue results every single time you cook. So far, 2M Smokehouse has never let us down, and it may be the best in the Texas. Highly recommended!

2M Smokehouse Sausage

2M Smokehouse offers two different types of pork and beef sausage. Their pork link is made with Serrano peppers and Oaxaca cheese, and it’s wonderful. The Serrano peppers bring a little more heat, while the silky Oaxaca cheese calm down the heat and adds incredible moisture and flavor.

Their house made Akashi Beef Link has that rich, beefy flavor you would expect from a quality link of beef sausage. The casing is tight and breaks with a crisp snap without being too chewy. Because they are using Akashi beef, you get that pronounced beef flavor that you have come to expect from quality beef.

2M Smokehouse Mexican Street Corn

Corn prepared any way always goes great with barbecue, and the Mexican Street Corn at 2M Smokehouse is no exception. Most barbecue joints only have beans, potato salad, and slaw, which has become a staple at smokehouses all throughout Texas.

Being able to pair some of the best brisket and sausage in the state with a sweet corn dressed in Oaxaca cheese and spices will leave you wondering if you’ve died and gone to heaven. It’s a must-try the next time you’re in the area.

2M Smokehouse Pickles and Onions

Every plate of barbecue at 2M Smokehouse is served with their homemade pickles and onions. From what I can tell, their pickles are brined in house with seasonings. The slices are cut thick and displayed on every tray to complement your meal.

The onions are cut thick and appear to be brined in house as well, offering that sharp hit when paired with beef or pork. Onions, pickles, and sauce may not be for everyone, but if that is something you like, 2M Smokehouse puts great effort in these complementary extras that take the experience over the top.

2M Smokehouse BBQ Sauce

Just like rubs, barbecue sauce recipes have become trade secrets that few will ever know. Although I have never asked, I can only assume that is the case for the 2M Smokehouse sauce. Their barbecue sauce is like nothing you will ever try. It has a honey like sweetness and texture that complements beef and pork perfectly, and it only takes a dab. If you are not a fan of barbecue sauces on the sweeter side, you may not like it. But, one thing you will be able to say is their sauce is truly unique.

What Time Does 2M Smokehouse Sell Out?

On most days they are open 11-4pm. I spoke to a person at 2M Smokehouse, and they said some days they sell out of brisket around 2pm, while other days it could be closer to 3:30pm.

The 2M Smokehouse restaurant is in the turquoise building on the right, while the barbecue pits are in the smokehouse on the left. 2M uses traditional flow offset smokers like you would find in Austin, Tx and their barbecue is smoked using oak from what I could tell by taste. To the right of the turquoise building is an outdoor area with several wood picnic benches and umbrellas where you can enjoy your food outside.

Conclusion

If you're ever in the San Antonio area, you owe it to yourself to check out 2M Smokehouse. Every time we have gone, it has been about a 10-20 minute wait to get your barbecue.

The staff will make you feel right at home as if you're eating at their dinner table. Their unique barbecue sauce is on the tables and plastic bags, butcher paper, and foil are on stand by in case you need to take leftovers.

Everything we have eaten at 2M Smokehouse has been great. I am a huge fan of Central Texas BBQ, and 2M Smokehouse is at the top of the game when it comes to traditional offset smoked barbecue.

Just to be clear, I have no affiliation with 2M Smokehouse or with anyone who works there. When you produce barbecue and side dishes this good, people will feel naturally compelled to write about you.

Barbecue is important to American culture in many cities throughout the United States. It is that constant variable that pulls people together from all walks of life to break bread outside on a wood picnic bench. There is always a sense of calm at a barbecue joint that can’t be explained.

Life slows down a bit as you enjoy and appreciate slow smoked meats created by a pit master who tended a fire for 12-14 hours. It’s this time and dedication that makes you appreciate the art of perfectly rendered brisket that few in life will ever achieve.
