Apple 5K Display Screen Text Too Small? Fix It
The 27” Apple 5K screen is amazing, but it has one problem. The text on the screen can be too small to read. Here is how to fix it.
I have enjoyed every 27″ Apple 5K display I have owned. The build quality, life expectancy, and overall usability has been great. But, if there was ever a complaint, it would be the text size on the screen is too small in the default setting.
I am in my forty's making my way up to my fifties and I do not wear glasses. I have had my eyes laser corrected several years ago. For some reason, the Apple 5K screen leaves a lot to be desired for the way the text size is rendered.
It is so small, it makes it difficult to see what you’re typing. Making a simple adjustment will resolve this issue. Here is what I did, and I feel this will work great for most people.
Scale Display Resolution
At the time of writing this, I am using macOS Sonoma 14.6.1.
- Click on the Apple icon in the upper right-hand corner and.
- Go to —> System Settings —> Displays.
- In the middle, there is a “Default” setting that your display should be set to out of the box.
- Click the option to the left. It will be the one in between “Larger Text” and “Default”.
- Done.
You could click the “Larger Text” option if you need the text as large as possible. That option is too large for me.
The Screen Will Be More Engaging
If there is one thing you can say about an iPad screen, it’s playful and engaging. The way the icons and text come off the screen makes for a more enjoyable experience. Increasing the text on your Mac computer will have the same effect.
Everything on the screen will be a little larger, easier to read and easier to click elements. I have to work a lot in iMessage because I communicate and schedule many of our customers that way. Scaling the screen to make text larger has really helped in the iMessages app.
Because the screen has so much resolution, it can handle the scaling without making everything look too blurry. 5K is A LOT of resolution on a 27” screen. You need to make your computer work for you.
It doesn’t matter what the person to your left or right is doing. Set up your computer, so your experience is comfortable, which will be make you more productive. Try it out a few weeks before switching back to see if you can adjust to it.
Is the Apple 27” Studio Display Worth the Price?
It’s no secret that Apple products are expensive. I have been using Apple since around the year 2000. While it hasn’t been perfect, I think the quality of their products is second to none.
With that being said, their displays have been extremely reliable for me over the years. I have owned several iterations of external displays new and old, along with many 5K iMac computers. All have been the absolute best monitors I have owned.
